Let me start off by saying that this jacket has potential and a lot of it, but I feel that Brooks Range needs to take advantage of that. The Cirro is a lightweight Primaloft filled jacket that is best suited to windy spring days and skiing,
either as a mid layer or an outer layer. It is unbelievably warm and I wish there was still snow around here so I could ski with it, but 30 degree bike rides should substitute quite well. The outer material is Pertex, a.9oz rip stop nylon, and in my opinion feels very delicate. When I pulled it out of the box I thought that the material would rip if anything touched it. I was wrong, I went mountain biking in the Cirro and it looks fine. The pockets were great and they did hold a lot of weight, I had a bike tube, CO2 inflator and tire levers in one pocket and it held up great. I would love to know what the long time durability of Pertex is but as of now it is the new wonder fabric.
Now how BR can make this jacket the best lightweight option on the market? First get rid of the main zipper and put something a little heavier duty on
there. I was riding and when I went to take it off, the zipper jammed. A little bike lube on the zipper got me out but if I’m paying $170 for a jacket I want the zipper to work. Second are the cuffs on the sleeves. They are just an elastic material and when you are moving your arms a lot they tend to bunch up. This may be caused by my thin wrists or the elastic not being tight enough. I understand that it is made to be ultra-light but I would sacrifice a couple of ounces for function.
Wow Factor-
- Super Lightweight only 11.8 ounces for a medium
- The pockets are perfectly placed and are HUGE.
- Gotta love the Brooks Range Bunny on the back of the neck.
- Made of Pertex. Although I had my doubts in the beginning, this fabric won my trust. I would love to see more gear made out of it.
- Great as a mid layer with a shell for cold, wet days.
- Really comfortable
- It fit me well, but some people did complain that the sizing was off. Just to be sure call BR and make sure your size is right.
Buyer Beware-
- The main zipper is not worthy of being on this jacket. The entire jacket is superb but is brought down by the zipper and the cuffs.
- The cuffs tend to bunch up after a lot of motion. I’m not sure why but it does get annoying.
Final Verdict- If you are looking for a synthetic jacket that really holds its own buy this. The flaws are there but if you can see past them, this is one of the best synthetic jackets I’ve seen.
